Could we perhaps tackle this part -- bundle and link with a recent version
of libcurl -- and postpone dealing with ssl issues? On older systems, we
can link our bundled libcurl with the system's openssl library; on the
newer systems that support it, we can use the `--with-darwinssl` configure
flag to tell libcurl to use the macOS Secure Transport API.
