 The other possible cause for this is this <https://github.com/macports

 969dec99a801dec9918fbde6ddf5d442> commit, wherein parallel building was
 re-enabled for libgcc builds. That can do weird and unpredictable things
 to a build. More I think of it, that is in fact more likely to be the
 cause, I suppose.

 I'll see if the test build with the new linker on 10.6.8 finishes or not.
