New description:

 With a fresh installation of MacPorts under High Sierra, I tried

 {{{
 sudo port install imagemagick +rsvg
 }}}

 This goes on for a while, installing dependencies, before it crashes with
 the error

 }}}

 When I try the command again, I get the same result, but only a small list
 of remaining dependencies, so I assume the error may be in one of these:

 $ sudo port install imagemagick +rsvg
 --->  Computing dependencies for ImageMagick
 The following dependencies will be installed:
  graphviz
  librsvg
  vala
 Continue? [Y/n]: y
