 On MacOs HighSierra, python 2.7, the command

 '''fails complaining that '''functools_lru_cache''' could not be imported.
 The fix is to install also the package '''py27-backports-
 functools_lru_cache''', which however does not appear among dependencies
 of py27-matplotlib.
