 gcc6 is good and solid and pretty much is the current go-to on PPC, at
 least until the excess build errors on gcc7 are ironed out.

 I have not built lower gcc versions recently, but they should not be
 affected.

 gcc8/libgcc-devel have not tested by me so far on PPC.
