 It seems to me that we have to address this issue on a port by port

 If, with more than one data point (glib), we can attempt to come up with a
 more elegant solution.\\
 Is there another port that is not working correctly?

 Setting a global variable for all users at all times seems to be
 antithetical to how we usually do things.\\
 Forgive me if I am missing something.
