 I'm a bit concerned because this -x11 seems to be getting passed down to
 dependencies too.

 The build log looks strange:

 I don't understand why it's using neither the cocoa nor the x11 variant
 here; I don't see a codepath in the portfile that could cause that to
 happen.

 It ultimately fails when it tries to do the same thing with the gtk3 port,
 which has a check for that:
