 I spent some time looking into this, and it's a ''lot'' more complicated
 than I anticipated. There are so many places where `dist_subdir` is used,
 that are many nested function calls removed from the place where the names
 of the distfiles are available. I still plan to do this, but it's not the
 simple change I thought it would be.
