New description:

 I just upgraded qgis to 3.0.1_2. I followed the instructions
 [ticket:56147 here] to get it to build properly. But, now if I try to
 open files it just crashes. More specifically:
 1) If I open a project that works in qgis 3.0.0, it brings up a dialog
 that says: Handle Bad Layers and lists one of my layers (this dialog
 didn't occur in 3.0.0). If I click browse, to find the data for that
 layer, it crashes.
 1a) If instead of clicking browse, I click OK, it brings up a dialog that
 says that there are still 1 unhandled layer(s) that will be lost if I
 close now. If I again click OK it skips that layer.
 For both of the above, the same project worked fine in 2.8 and in 3.0 and
 the files for the layer are present.
 2) if I open a new project and then attempt to add a layer (vector or
 raster) it brings up the datasource dialog. If I then click on the three
 dots to select the file, it just crashes.

 The crash does not bring up an dialog box, as typically happens when an
 application crashes on a Mac. I looked in my console app and in
 system.log I see this for each crash:

 {{{
 Mar 27 09:32:27 adershowitzMBP15 Qgis3[37266]: assertion failed: 17D102:
 libxpc.dylib + 72637 [F7E5F1BC-614B-39CB-B6CE-92A9C7B7EC0B]: 0x89
 }}}

 Some library issue?
