Comment (by raimue):

 This could be solved by registering the symlinks created by `port select`
 to the corresponding `*_select` port in the registry (the port that
 provides the `base` file). The symlinks would then be removed when the
 port is deactivated. However, as the symlinks are not part of the port
 archive, they would not be restored when the port is activated again. That
 would require re-running `port select`.
