 I forgot to cc myself to this ticket, and so I just saw this now. I did
 let port clean my build, but that's OK. I'll just apply the patch and
 rebuild.

 I can submit the PR once we are happy with this approach. I already
 modified the Portfile in the manner Michael suggests in comment:9.
