 it seems to me that the selection of a newer compiler was implemented in
 these two commits ([https://github.com/macports/macports-
 ports/commit/17a9c6ae027524bdf943a3c3015542a5f3585977 1] and
 [https://github.com/macports/macports-
 ports/commit/3adc6e161eea2f5b215e209fc33191aeea7f9708 2]) and it builds
 now on [https://build.macports.org/builders/ports-10.5_ppc_legacy-
 watcher/builds/19403 10.5] and
 [https://build.macports.org/builders/ports-10.6_i386_legacy-
 watcher/builds/20222 10.6] as well.

 @kencu: is this ticket resolved and can it be closed, or...? I am looking
 into updating {{{py-cairo}}} to 1.18.1 and would like to know if there is
 anything you think would need to be changed at the same time.
