 Yes, variant selections are passed down to any dependencies that have not
 yet been installed.

 The workaround is to add `-gfortran` to your port install line.

 Takeshi, the fix is to follow wiki:PortfileRecipes#default_variants
 (unless the compilers portgroup you're using has a way it to handle
 default_variants for you; I'm not familiar with the portgroup).
