 Another thing to try, which would also be simpler than the patch, would be
 to try compiling while ensuring that cctools with the +xcode variant is
 installed.
 Based on comments I received on the [https://lists.macports.org/pipermail
 /macports-dev/2019-January/039999.html mailing list], it seems that the
 current default (cctools +llvm70) is causing such issues.

 I tried myself, and using cctools+xcode solved similar (but not identical)
 issues.
