 So what breaks when blindly updating from ImageMagick-6 to ImageMagick-7?

 Answer: Probably lots of stuff.  For example, the latest version of
 Inkscape fails to build due to [among other things] a change in the
 signature of a constructor.

 What to do?

 Answer: Make haste slowly.  Update to version 7 when the consequences of
 updating are understood.
