 I don't know whether you should use the binary instead, but from building
 from source, the
 [http://docs.couchdb.org/en/2.3.1/whatsnew/2.3.html#version-2.3.1 release
 notes] for CouchDB 2.3.1 claim it to be compatible with Erlang 21.x, and
 MacPorts' `erlang` is currently 21.1.
