Comment (by chrstphrchvz):

 One question I have is whether CPAN.pm (and therefore Perl 5 when
 installed with core modules) actually requires/assumes gzip to be present.
 Linux distributions seem to have gzip mandatorily installed; I would think
 that is not the case for BSD or other UNIX.
