 @ryandesign: that's fascinating! (really!) ... note that the FALLBACK was
 Marcus Calhoun-Lopez's suggestion, not mine. I didn't make it beyond what
 I've written here.

 FYI: I'm heading off for vacation starting now for all practical purposes
 for 2 weeks. I was just going to revert the change to the poppler Portfile
 that started all of this .. but, if you think there's an alternative /
 better solution such as you describe, then I'm happy to hand this off to
 you to work on while I'm away.
