 MacPorts only knows about one version of a port: the version currently in
 the ports tree. So right now, if you are using an up to date copy of our
 ports collection, it is only possible to install pango 1.42.4. It is not
 possible to install any other version.

 The darktable packaging instructions you referred to instruct you to add
 the ports directory in your home directory to sources.conf. Therefore I
 suspect that you have an older pango portfile for version 1.40.12 in
 (probably the x11 subdirectory of) the ports directory in your home
 directory, and the solution would be to remove that.
