 Since you are knowledgeable enough to compile mutt from source, have you
 tried to compile neomutt from source? Does the issue persist?

 I am the maintainer of `neomutt` in MacPorts. I don't have a Catalina
 system to test this first hand, nor I will have in the foreseeable future.
 In case this repeats when compiling from source I strongly recommend you
 to submit this issue upstream.
