 Iain has had good success on darwin9+ with gcc9.

 even without the patch I needed...I'll have to see hoe that could be.
 darwin8 is hoped to be supported in gcc 9.3. Perhaps I can help him with
 that.

 He uses a slightly different configure set than we do.
