Comment (by ryandesign):

9 years later, 0.2.9, released in 2008, is still the latest version. The
project appears to be abandoned. Its domain name is now owned by a
squatter. Its forum is gone. The code is in a read-only CVS repository on
SourceForge. There is no bug tracker. The last mailing list post was in
2006. The project's SourceForge homepage says:

 > After a long time of inactivity, it's time to admit it. This project
needs someone that takes care of it. If you have programming skills, like
this project and have some free time to dedicate to FreePOPs, get in touch
 with us.

The software works by scraping the HTML of webmail providers and making
the data available via POP3. If there has been no development of this
project in the past decade, it's likely it no longer works, since it's
likely the webmail providers have changed their HTML since then.

I tried to build 0.2.9 using my update attempt from 9 years ago. It failed
to build. The build problem was [https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=733386 reported to Debian] in 2013. Debian removed
freepops from their repository in 2015. The bug report was
 [https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/freepops/+bug/1277664 copied to
Ubuntu] in 2014. Ubuntu removed freepops in 2017. Maybe we should do the
 same.
