 For my personal use, I have switched over to using the integrated per-user
 package management system released with emacs-25 which installs w3m
 without problems.  From a quick search seems that active development on
 w3m has moved to [github.com/emacs-w3m][].

 I will take a look at how easy it would be to switch over to the newer
 version of w3m.
