 fakeroot && sudo port install fakeroot -universal` seems to make no
 difference. The same error occurs.

 Correct, the fakeroot port is unusual in that it forces the universal
 variant to be enabled, and also overrides the user's selection of
 universal architectures. It does this to ensure that it can work with any
 executable the user might have on their system. The port needs to be
 updated to account for the fact that i386 builds are no longer possible
 with the 10.14 SDK and up.
