 I thought I would see what people think of the idea

 Silencing the linker warnings with `-Wl,-w` in base will be impossible to
 sell, quite rightly, so I won't try that. Perhaps we can do that in the
 ports that fail due to the warnings -- IIRC,they were the cmake builds,
 but that was a long while ago now.
