 For the current bug I successfully tested a workaround - add the following
 line to post-configure in gmic Portfile
 {{{
 reinplace "s/\\(MANDATORY_CFLAGS =\\)/\\1 -Dgmic_pixel_type2=char/"
 ${worksrcpath}/src/Makefile
 }}}
