 Yes, all you need is curl. When I do my {{{/opt/bootstrap/}}} thing above,
 I only install {{{curl}}} in the bootstrap installation. I've been using
 this successfully since 2016 now, 100% success back to Tiger.

 As we discussed elsewhere, if I hack the fluff out of the {{{curl}}} port
 to just the basics, it becomes extremely lean -- just curl and openssl.
 There are a couple of minor build deps (pkgconfig).
