 I feel so stupid, but there’s a simple workaround  for users ... compile
 everything under Rosetta 2 !
 You can either
 run your Terminal from Rosetta 2.
 Or do commands as:

 {{{arch -x86_64  sudo port install R}}}

 It’s good too  - code runs about twice as fast as 2 or 3 year old 13 inch
 equivalent MacBook Pro!
