 looks like the {{{+java}}} variant is not working, at least on Catalina.

 I'd suggest you go with the default installation, at least to begin.

 sodo port clean octave
 sudo port -v install octave
 }}}

 The article about installing octave you referenced was about four years
 old, and things can change over time...Marcus sets the defaults quite
 carefully, and you should find them OK.

 If you really need java support, you'll have to wait until he fixes it...
