New description:

 i ran into the problem described ticket:59285

 it was only through finding that ticket that i found i needed '-d' to see
 the failure.  even doing that doesn't indicate the solution, which luckily
 that closed ticket described (signing xcode eula, which i had in the past,
 but must have needed to redo after updating xcode some time in the past
 that i'd forgotten).

  1. selfupdate should indicate that it has failed, even without -d.
  1. unsigned xcode eula should be detected, and the 'xcodebuild -license'
 script launched, or at worst, instructions on how to do so.
