 but doesn't actually run, it turns out, due to

 $ open /Applications/MacPorts/xxdiff.app
 LSOpenURLsWithRole() failed with error -10810 for the file
 /Applications/MacPorts/xxdiff.app.

 which is, no doubt, a Separate Issue.
