 I like these ideas.  Maybe have the port client use an HTTP HEAD request,
 perhaps additionally with checksums sent by the server so that the client
 can avoid downloading base if it doesn't need to.

 Additionally it would be nice to have perhaps something like
 status.macports.org that shows the status of origin/mirror hosts.
