 Thank you for this clear report. It sounds like people are working on
 fixing poppler.

 I want to report that version 0.86.1 of poppler also breaks evince.
 evince file.pdf
 (gives Segmentation Fault)
 This happens for some but not all files.

 I found this URL helpful.

 (different decade; different OS)
 But the quote:
 "Hi,
 this is a bug in poppler.
 It is caused by different sizes of bounding boxes of words and bounding
 boxes of lines."
 seemed meaningful to me.

 Fix for me:
 sudo port activate poppler
 pick version 0.84.1
 evince works as normal.
