 I think perhaps we might just do that force to the older version for most
 systems.

 If someday the newer version is needed, we'll just have to get some kind
 soul to build it on a newer system with an older deployment target
 (hopefully) and then install it as a binary on older systems.

 no other choice, really, other than fixing {{{rust}}} which is just a bear
 to hack on....
