 I found a similar issue in [56563]. Even though a comment there said that
 the underlying issue was fixed in libarchive 3.4.0, and my libarchive is
 3.4.2

 bsdtar 3.4.2 - libarchive 3.4.2 zlib/1.2.11 liblzma/5.2.4 bz2lib/1.0.8
 liblz4/1.9.2 libzstd/1.4.4
 }}}
 I can confirm that the problem reported by [56563] is the same one I'm
 having, and the fix (disabling {{{hfscompression}}} in {{{macports.conf}}}
 for non-root installs) is the same as well. So perhaps the libarchive bug
 is back.
