 I think USER is an environment variable that's reasonable to expect in
 most environments.

 It will usually be absent if the shell is not started by login, or in
 certain instances in a shell spawned by sudo.

 I suppose I can look into making that change, but it would be interesting
 to know why the buildbot environment _outside_ of mpbb doesn't have it
 set.
