 This issue persists in the recent PHP 7.3.24 and 7.4.12 releases - the
 previous script snippets above can still recreate the hang/crash symptom.

 It seems clear that this issue is unrelated to Composer or WordPress - but
 more likely a compilation issue related to (but not necessarily limited
 to) El Capitan.
