 I don't have an opinion about GTK3 or MESA.  All I know is that the GIMP
 website [https://www.gimp.org/downloads/] states, "Since the 2.8.2
 version, GIMP runs on OSX natively. No X11 environment is required."  The
 dependency on X11 libraries contradicts this claim.  Clearly, something is
 not right.
