 I don't speak deep c++, but that missing symbol would appear to be defined
 here in this c++ header:

 <https://git.redump.net/mame/tree/src/lib/netlist/plib/pstring.h>

 if that header is actually being included in the build, then -- not sure
 -- maybe the function is somehow being optomized right out of code by the
 compiler?
