 Michael -- some progress here.

 the file you're missing is a macports created file for our "select"
 process. It has to have a specific name, and sit in the "files" dir under
 the Portfile.

 looks like you're nearly there!

 btw, when tweaking destrooting, you don't have to rebuild all of gcc; just
 delete the destroot folder in the work directory and run the destroot
 again untill you get it right.
