 I have the same problem with installing dependencies for R.

 I also can install python38 +optimizations, but R is requiring python38
 +universal (python38-3.8.6_0+universal.darwin_20.arm64-x86_64.tbz2).

 Similar problem (in the sense that +universal wont install) with port icu,
 which is discussed in ticket #45268 and #61704.

 Is there a way around this or are we waiting on the developers of R to
 update?
