Comment (by todo):

 I also ran into the same problem ("cpio read error: bad file format").
 Here are my configs:
   - Sierra 10.12.6
   - XCode 8.3.3
   - XQuartz 2.7.11
   - I actually deleted my old MacPort.

 I have tried to download the .pkg files twice, but neither of them is
 working. Below are the error logs from console.

 My temporary workaround is to install MacPorts-2.6.2-10.12-Sierra.pkg. My
 concern with 2.6.2 is if I do a selfupdate, I'll break it again. Can
 someone confirm this will not happen?
