 Ken provided a proposed resolution via the port file, in comment:45.

 As a software developer, I can appreciate not wanting to implement any
 hacks. That said, Ken's solution looks clean. Enough so, that I wouldn't
 consider it a hack... but rather, behavior that's necessary due to the
 state of the port.

 Would you be willing to reconsider Ken's solution?
