easy, since the moment the build fails, the port no longer has control,

Ah, fair enough.
Okay, so here's the million-dollar question: Would there be interest in
enhancing the MacPorts base, to allow more customized error handling via
the port file? (Assuming the enhancements were contributed by someone...
like myself.)
The idea being that, while it would certainly be useful in this particular
case, it could also be useful for other things down the road.
I realize more discussion would be warranted via the mailing list,
including a more formal proposal. But just wanted to ask that question
before going further...
