 Glad you got it figured out.

 Indeed, software you install with Homebrew can cause problems for software
 you want to build with MacPorts and vice versa. For this reason we don't
 recommend trying to use two package managers on the same computer;
 instead, pick one and uninstall the other and any software you had
 installed with it. Of course we'd be delighted if MacPorts is the one you
 choose to keep, and if there's any software you need that's not in
 MacPorts, feel free to file tickets requesting it be added, or if you're
 feeling adventurous you can try to add it yourself and send us a pull
 request.
