 just to be clear, {{{py-matplotlib}}} works perfectly fine, this ticket is
 about `matplotlib-basemap`, which is not supported anymore by upstream,
 they suggest to move to `py-cartopy`. This port is `nomaintainer` so
 that's likely part of the reason that it hasn't been fixed yet besides
 that this is the first ticket about it.

 I looked a bit in the weekend and to me it seems the issue is due to
 "implicit declarations" in some of the `numpy` functions used, at least
 the message is:

 `/opt/local/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.9/lib/python3.9
 /site-packages/numpy/distutils/checks/cpu_avx512_knm.c:9:9: error:
 implicit declaration of function '_mm512_4fmadd_ps' is invalid in C99
 [-Werror,-Wimplicit-function-declaration]`

 but I couldn't get it to work quickly and don't use the package myself so
 am likely not going to spend much time on this.
