Comment:

 Ken, the established problem is that it fails to build if the `libmd-dev`
 package is installed.

 Without that package it will pick `libssl-dev`, i.e., OpenSSL, and build
 fine.

 Uninstalling `libmd-dev` temporarily while building base is possible, but
 a nuisance.
