 the system is an old mac, imac 27" mid 2011, running osx 10.13.6 high
 sierra. using paralllels desktop 16.5.0 pro for osx 10.14.6. the host mac
 is too old to upgrade after 10.13.

 there is no difference is executing freshclam with or without an explicit
 path.

 however, today, after a few days of non-activity, i see this:
