 Installation of m4 without +universal succeeded so it never occurred to me
 that clean might be necessary. What I did next was

 sudo port install openimageio +universal
 }}}

 The first thing port tried to do after that was `install m4+universal`,
 That installation attempt is not something I had control over. That is
 what failed with the socklen_t unknown type issue. I very much doubt that
 clean would have helped.

 I'm on an Intel MacBook. libffi+universal installation succeeded for me.
