Any suggestions regarding how best to deal with this issue?
I found a similar ticket #63612 for "quassel", but I am unsure if this is
something that can be fixed in notmuch's Portfile or requires an upstream
change.

#63612 is not similar.
Fix coming shortly.
I reported the problem to the developers' mailing list but it has not
shown up in the web archive yet so I can't share the URL here yet.
